Rosedale is another long time contender in KC's BBQ scene. There's a number of places out of towners have heard of and want to try when they come to KC. Well, Danny Edwards and Rosedale are conveniently both off SW Boulevard close to downtown (and even better, Boulevard Brewing). One surprise was they open at 10am. I drove past at 10:30 to make sure I remembered where it was and kept driving, only to realize I didn't have to wait.....But it's in a great area. I love SW Boulevard, it's very industrial, very diverse, the Rosedale area itself has "Rosedale neighborhood" banners everywhere. I didn't see much here besides this place honestly.....BUT it gets packed at lunch with the large amount of factories, shops, and hardware places around. Inside is good size, you can order at either end of the counter. Staff was friendly, though I already knew what I wanted. I had the pig pen (beef) and a side of fries. They have water in coolers on either side of the restaurant.....I've realized EVERY BBQ place in KC makes you pay for refills so customers can't access the soda fountain. I got y sandwich and took a look. Lots of meet, different colored peppers, and cheese. Honestly, I could have used more cheese. I couldn't even tell there was any on it. Peppers kind if blended everything together, couldn't tell them apart too much. Meat was tender and had good flavor. Their sauce is great. I got a whole lot of those fried jalapeno bottlecaps that were delicious but SOOOOOOO hot. Fries were good, I probably didn't need a whole side of them. I'd definitely come here again, it's a very unique place in a unique area. My sandwich was good, not outstanding, but I would like to try more. If you ever want to trek off the beaten path and into a different environment give this a shot.

Ever dined at a place and the service was the best part of your meal? Welcome to Rosedale Barbeque. Ordered the three slider combo with pulled pork, turkey and brisket. I figured it was a good way to try all the meats and see how they fared. They did not fare well in my opinion. The turkey was reminiscent to grocery store deli meat with no smokiness. Tried the brisket next and it was fatty, chewy and flavorless. Not even their barbeque sauce could salvage those poor pieces of beef. Last was the pulled pork which was OK and more edible than the rest. Fries were crinkle cut frozen variety, nothing special. What impressed me was the servers were fast, efficient and nice. From when they took my order to when I received my food was less than 5 minutes. They repeated this process over and over the entire time I was there as I sat at the counter watching them work the crowd with ease. Interestingly enough though, service alone will not make me a repeat customer.

I was really disappointed. Friends had mentioned they really enjoyed this place so I thought would give it a shot. The sauce was just weird, not much flavor at all. I had long ends and the meat was mostly fat. Had corn nuggets and they tasted like they had been in the freezer a little too long. If your wanting some real BBQ go on over to Arthur Bryant's it Joe BBQ. Take a pass on this place.

Well, I was dragged here for lunch one more time, against my better judgment, and I'm sorry to say that the situation has not improved in the slightest. In fact, I'm not sure if it was due to my just having had some DELICIOUS burnt ends from Joe's KC the night before, but my meal seemed somehow even more disappointing than my initial visit. I really tried to give this place a fair shake, as they are on the low-end of BBQ prices in KC, and a few of my friends consistently rave about it... but I just can't seem to understand the appeal. The lines were long, the sauce was funky, the meat was dry and relatively flavorless. There's at least a half-dozen places I can name off the top of my head that serve a superior BBQ in every way. Perhaps if Rosedale were located somewhere else, like Minnesota, it might stand out in a positive way. Around here, it's just disappointing, low-end BBQ. Safe to say, after this last visit, I won't be coming back.

Rosedale BBQ has been a family staple for 40+ years. Picnics, weddings, graduations, and many celebrations were catered or spent inside one of Kansas City's historic BBQ landmarks. My go-to meal over the years has been beef, potato salad, fries, white bread, pickles, RC Cola, and/or sweet tea. Well, today started out with decisions......... Forgive the BBQ name-dropping I'm about to embark upon, but I started out in the parking lot of Q39 BBQ down the street from KUMC. Ran inside and grabbed a menu. Have heard great things about Q39 and just couldn't pull the trigger today. Another BBQ joint that has been on my mind lately is Quicks BBQ down on Merriam Lane, not too far from where I was at. Upon arriving at Quicks, I noticed they were freakin closed at 3pm on a Tuesday!!!!!! Now I'm deciding between traveling down Merriam Lane to Woodyard BBQ or say screw it and proceed on over to Bonito for Taco Tuesday. El Bonito Michoacan it is........... Well, not quite. After passing Rosedale and sitting at the lights on 7th & Rainbow/Southwest BLvd, I whip a u-turn and decide on what I know will be my go-to meal; Rosedale BBQ. I remember they underwent a small remodel and updating so was anxious to see what the new look entailed. Upon entering, you immediately get that Oklahoma Joe's vibe. To be fair, different businesses around town have been installing wood trimming with the sheet metal panels along with the high resolution & colorful graphic indoor signage. This is exactly what Rosedale BBQ did. They installed new flooring, bar stools, bathroom fixtures, lighting, and other items in the back kitchen area. I'm standing there hoping like hell that Rosedale didn't mess with the prime jewell of any BBQ joint; the Smokers! The menu appeared a little cleaner and streamlined. Going against my better judgment after being forewarned many many times, I decide on the short rib dinner with potato salad, cole slaw, french fries, and bread. Oh yea, I also order a sweet tea. The girl at the counter is very friendly which may come as a shocker because Rosedale has been known to have rude people taking orders (which to be honest, is no big deal) I'm here for the BBQ and really don't care about attitudes e.g. Gates BBQ. The plates come up pretty quickly considering we are the ONLY two people in the entire restaurant on a Tuesday afternoon. Should this be a red flag? Later I overheard the kitchen guy telling a carry-out customer that the holidays don't result in good business for Rosedale. I can kinda see that; I guess. The ribs don't look too bad. Fries are well.....you know the always consistent crispy golden crinkle cut & wax paper bagged variety. The bread......oh Lord the "bread" has changed! It resembles the packaged white sliced Italian type bread you can find in the local grocery store. WHY?? * Side Note* Apparently the bread has been this type for a while and not of the traditional Wonder Bread style Man, these ribs better be off the charts; I swear to God! Ugh, upon my first tug on these ribs an uneasy feeling occurs with the sheer amount of force required to tear these things apart. But the shocker was when I pulled that thin top layer of rib meat and I'll be damned if these ribs weren't 80% fat & grizzle! BBQ 101 tells you most cuts of meat in BBQ cuisine REQUIRE a process called rendering. Hence; fats liquefy and help turn tough cuts of meat with lots of connective tissues into tender bites of mouth watering morsels. At this point I'm so disappointed and move onto the coleslaw which is hidden beneath the ribs and thus coated in grease from I assume the overly fatty ribs. The potato salad wasn't much better as is was mushy and tasted as though overcooking had occurred in Rosedales kitchen or the manufacturing plant (if this is where it came from). At least the fries were FANTASTIC! Might be psychologically at this point, but I couldn't even accept the sweet tea as being very fresh. You know what....I should have known something was up when the pitmaster personally came out and seemed pre-occupied with our ribs. Why? He even commented that Rosedale was having a hard time getting customers to accept their previous ribs. I have no idea what that comment meant or what era of ribs he was referring to. This I do know....the current selection of ribs at Rosedale on this very day SUCKED! I'm still sitting here debating why I didn't take my butt to Woodyard or stay at Q39. I'll chalk this up as a bad day or maybe Rosedale did the unthinkable and over-cleaned their historic smokers. Worse yet, maybe they installed new smokers and proper "seasoning" hasn't sit-in yet? Then again, take a gander at the long and growing list of 2 & 3 star reviews for Rosedales BBQ. Sorry folks, but this is scary news. I refuse to utter a similarity to the once mighty BBQ joint situated up around College & Antioch....could it be happening to the great Rosedale BBQ........Nah, I refuse to believe this, so 4 stars based on great history

Rosedale BBQ came on the recommendation of the Travel Channel as one of Anthony Bourdain's stops on No Reservations. They definitely have a country BBQ joint feel -- no frills, just styrofoam plates loaded up with the smoked meat of your choice. Composite wood laminate tables with paper towel rolls. The 'cue was delicious. Out of the wide selection ranging from a half-chicken to smoked sausage to turkey, beef or pork, I settled on a platter of two sliced meats (beef brisket cut lean and sliced pork). It came with spicy baked beans and slaw and fries. The tomatoey sauce had a little bit of a kick to it. The meats were delicious. They slice them a little thin for my taste but nonetheless the flavor was there. The place had a little too much smoke out in the dining area proper, so I'll leave it with four stars. An excellent little stop off I-35 if you're looking for some good local BBQ.

Reviewers are mostly right - there are better beef places in town. I come here for the chicken Q. I never bother with chicken at any other Q, because it's usually lousy. Here, it's just awesome ... Spicy-sweet, not oversauced, skin midway between chewy and crunchy. And did they change the beans? Omg, so good! Sweet/smoky/peppery, with lots of brisket mixed in. These are not the usual forgettable beans. Everyone in line last night was ordering the Mac n cheese ... Is it really worth it? Will have to try next time.

I have been eating Rosedale BarBQ several times a year since the late 1960's. It is not in my top 5 for ribs, sauce, or any category except for fries. But it carries decades of dependability serving blue collar folks a reliably good plate of smoked meat, unique sauce, great beans and fries with RC cola. One of my earliest memories is riding from Rosedale to Liberty in the back seat next to slab of ribs wrapped in butcher paper. Anxiously awaiting to get home and peel the sauce soaked white bread off the top and making messy rib meat sandwiches with pickles. Today I had the burnt ends, but i normally go with the beef dinner. The beef plate has plenty of meat to make a healthy sandwich and then some, plus slaw, beans and great crispy crinkle cut fries. This is a place that is greater than its parts. Nothing stands out as incredible but everything is solid and stands the test of time, and wouldn't we be lucky to get that more often. Rosedale's for the long run...

Horrible customer service and the ribs are pretty crappy. They are lacking in flavor and smoke. Not worth it. With all of the good places in KC, this will now become a last resort. The fries and pickles are the best things on the menu here. And their hot BBQ sauce tastes like crap

I love getting local BBQ when Im in new cities. I wanted to try Oklahoma Joe's during my last stop in KC but line was crazy so we stopped at Rosedale. Family owned and and in business for over 70 years. I was hoping the best. It missed the mark, unfortunately. The ribs. i dont think they were made in a BBQ pit. Most likely made in an oven. No smoke flavor or spice. No smoke ring to speak of. Tasted like pot roast and the sauce was definitely ketchup based which only added to the pot roast taste. The burnt ends were not burnt ends. They were chopped brisket. No BBQ flavor to speak of here. Anyone saying this is good BBQ doesnt know good BBQ.

Week 1 in "The KC BBQ Tour." The pulled pork sandwich was smashed, and the meet was a little dry, will very little color. However the sauce took the taste way up. The fries were crisp and hot, but lacked salt and had an odd taste with the ketchup. Note, there was no fountain drinks. Has the potential for more, but did not quite measure up. They received a 74%.

I've had more BBQ in Kansas City at Rosedale than any other single place and it remains my favorite, my desert island pick. Why? Simplicity, good price, uncompromising quality, same counter help for well over a decade. Love those ladies. Doesn't hurt that I worked within walking distance of them for 10 years, but Oklahoma Joe's was just over a mile away as well and Rosedale got most of my business. Look, you can get a gut stuffing rib dinner plenty of places, including here. What Rosedale really excels at to my mind are simpler dishes. Their beef or turkey sandwich on white bread is hands down the best in town for my money. The meat, unlike others, is fine chopped yet retains plenty of moisture. Their fries, twice fried, are crispy little critters tied up in wax paper. You order those two items and you might think you didn't order enough, but just wait. In about an hour you'll be glad you didn't get more. Their chili in the winter is exceptional. Not many BBQ places doing chili. Theirs is very, very fine ground meat, bit of smoke, hints of cumin, cinnamon, chili spices, onion, garlic. No big chunks of tomato, no beans, no filler, just pure goodness. Superb! Just my opinion? No. Certainly Oklahoma Joe's runs their lines out the door but so does Rosedale. More so than most other BBQ joints in town. It's packed wall to wall every day of the week for lunch... honestly, I've never had dinner here but that's because I live in Lawrence and at the time worked at KU Med up the hill just off state line. Driving back into the city 45 minutes, not after 80 miles of commuting thank you. Another choice as one of Kansas City's all-time great BBQ destinations. I hope you're around for another 100 years and beyond!

We know and love BBQ like Jack Stack and Gates, but what about Kansas City's other BBQ? My boyfriend and I are slowly making our way through Kansas City's local BBQ restaurants. Rosedale was a success - delicious food and reasonable prices. We stuffed ourselves on $23. Pulled pork is huge and completely stuffed. Their platters come with three generously portioned sides and 2 kinds of meat. The sauce is different, but in a good way; very sweet and savory. Best part for us: fresh mac n cheese bites. This is a must if you go!

Surprised this spot doesn't have better reviews. As a KC transplant, I was in town craving some BBQ. Ordered the 2 item plate w ham and burnt ends. It came w 3 sides, beans cole slaw and fries. Five stars on all items and sides...maybe 3 stars on burnt ends, weren't up to some other local spots. The staff is AMAZING. Perhaps the friendliest staff in the area, talked to the friendliest girls serving who gave us a history of the joint. The sauce is amazing, I forgot my Togo, my friend is gonna ship. My dad was a KCBBQ society member and we never broke bread here together. I'm telling. You....if u want a good KC BBQ experience without a fancy placement and silverware, stop here!!! I've hit most KC spots and for some reason this reminds me of home....

This is one of the best and most overlooked BBQ's in KC. Everything they do in this stand and shout environment is top notch from the ribs to chicken all is fine. I venture to say they have the best Fries in North America. I personally go for the half chicken at every opportunity not to mention the beer by the quart. Go!!

Rosedale is not a place that comes to your mind when you think of KC BBQ but this place is my secret gem! Its not pretty.. Its not always clean..its not in the best part of town but dang it its delicious! Huge fan of the beef on bun sandwich (FYI if you prefer it more lean than you have to ask! Think they charge a little extra but I don't like fatty beef so its worth it for me.) Also love the sausage sandwich (comes split and on bun). But the thing I love the most...the sauce. This sauce is one you will love or hate. Honestly my first time trying it I wasn't a fan. It is spicier than a typical sweet molasses KC sauce. So if in doubt start slow and add more sauce once you have tasted it. But there is something about the sauce that makes me come back for more! Also love the corn nuggets and now they have fried pickles! Yum! But hands down fave side is the crispy crinkle cut fries. Pair your meal with a bottle of RC Cola or Strawberry pop and you are dining local KC style!

Beef Deluxe, crinkle cut fries and the best baked beans on the planet is my usual. Beef has just the right amount of smoke and their sauce is a little sweet and a little spicy. Beans are sweet and meaty. Prices are reasonable. Order at counter and cop a squat at a booth, table or at the counter. They have a few tvs too to watch the game. Nothing fancy here but that's ok. OK Joes has nothing on Rosedale.

B I've had a lot of BBQ during my 33 years on earth. I like everything from the high-end and the low-end (divey joints. not that bull-hockey Famous Dave crap. that is an abomination to god). Rosedale BBQ falls squarely in the mid to low end and I must tell you, it is DELICIOUS!!. Great, cheery service, very reasonable prices, tender juicy burnt ends and great crinkle cut fries. So, that's my go to order but every time I see the ribs I swear I will try them the next time. But that hasn't happened. Yet! If the line is too long at Okie Joes, drive down the hill to the Rosedale BBQ on SW Blvd. It's.. hmm.. Extremely serviceable.

Excellent bbq and service. This place ranks just below the highest tier of bbq restaurants in KC, but it's not because it's lacking...it's just because those restaurants are just ridiculously good. This place is one where you pay less for your food, and get a large quantity and high quality--incredible bang for your buck. Get the burnt ends sandwich or ribs, and put extra sauce on them (they don't put enough of their own on, which is a shame because it's so good). Akso, get the cheesy corn bites or plain fries--the sweet potato fries here are not worth it--they're kind of bland. I would recommend coming here for people that appreciate good BBQ and aren't trying to spend too much money, this place has all you need :D

  • Frank L.

With all the BBQ places in KC, why would you go to Rosedale's? That is the question I keep asking myself after spending $15 on a mediocre meal. I came here with a group of 8 for dinner after a recommendation from a local who claimed this was the "best bbq in kc" Yes, he is still my friend, but let me tell you, that this os not the best BBQ in KC. I decided to try the burnt ends since I missed burnt ends night at Oklahoma Joe's on Wednesday. Bad move...While the portion was large, they tasted a bit like fatty pot roast. The sauces are also just OK here, they have 3 different kinds, spicy hot being my favorite. The best part of the dinner was spending time with friends, so it wasn't all that bad, but I would rather wait in line for 30 minutes and get some real KC BBQ. Sorry Rosedale, I will not be coming back.

Went on monday, Rosedales slab night. To be honest the meat did not have that smoked flavor. Would only rate their ribs a 2. Ordered some hot bbq sauce ( quart ) and some hot pickles. The pickles and the sauce were so good wishing I could rate the ribs higher but 2 is all I can give it. Been years ago I ate there and was not impressed then either. Overall I give them 3 stars since the service was great along with the pickles and sauce.

I enjoyed this BBQ more than any other place in kc. I got a the flying pig and it was well worth my money. So delicious and moist - chicken and ribs plate. Beans and fries were also wonderful. They also have a wide selection of unique soda like big red and cream soda. Obsessed

A friend talks my ears out about this place, so I had to try it. She moved to Denver 15yrs ago and she remembered Rosedale was the best BBQ she ever had. Her dad used to take her here when she was younger, but she hasn't been back to KC since. My expectation was very high walking into this place, so I gave this place a few more stars than what I actually felt so the rating isn't skewed. If you're a BBQ fanatic and have tried every place in KC, then go here to get your KC BBQ badge of honor. Otherwise, it's not really worth the trip. The flavor is bland on everything we tried. The atmosphere is dark/smoky and not inviting. Someone did have a very good point. The worst BBQ in KC is still the best BBQ elsewhere. I saw an older woman who works there, smoking a cig outside the door. Her T-shirt reads "Smoking for 65 Years," I nearly fell out of my chair laughing.

I could have sworn that I reviewed this place a long time ago, but apparently not. After a very lackluster experience at a different barbecue joint this evening I was reminded how good Rosedale has been all these years! About the only thing I've ever ordered from here are the burnt ends and fries, and frankly I don't feel the need to try anything else. At $9 for the dinner portion, which is very large, it doesn't get all that much better. It's not the best barbecue on the planet but it's not overpriced nor is it pretentious, which is more than I can say about some places in town. The main caveat about this place is that they have a tendency to be understaffed, so be prepared for wait a bit if you show up during peak times.

  • Zach G.

I was in the area and decided...Oklahoma Joes is close, but I should try someplace NEW. Darn you, Yelp...making me turn my back on consistently solid food for new places. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Rosedale was...somewhere in between. So, I rolled in here and it was dead. Ordered a burnt ends and fries, because burnt ends are the absolute best part of KC barbecue. The order came up really quickly, and I headed to my seat. So here is the food verdict - it's OK. The burnt ends are tasty, but inconsistent. Some pieces are amazingly tender, fatty, delicious...others are basically pieces or charcoal, making even the most die hard burnt ends fan question their dedication to the dish. The fries were standard Sysco fries with maybe a little bit of extra seasoning...good enough. The sauce - I think I like, but don't love, the sauce. AND, they have RC Cola. Holy crap, who in the world has RC Cola?!?! I forgot how much that stuff tastes like the runoff from a Japanese nuclear power plant, because I hadn't tasted it since the Clinton administration. The place doesn't smell overly BBQ-ish from outside or inside, which is both good and bad. You don't leave smelling like BBQ for the rest of the day or night, but you miss out on that most wonderful of Kansas City smells. Service is friendly enough, but not really friendly (that makes sense if you think about it). I think it's better than Gates or Bryants. However, that's not the point. The point is...why would I come to Rosedale when Oklahoma Joes is not five darn minutes away? Even with a 30 minute wait at Oklahoma Joes, I dare anyone to answer that question...

I sort of feel like 2 stars is a little low but 3 feels too high. Rosedale is a simple, straight forward place. No frills, not trying to be fancy and I'm cool with that. This isn't trying to be Jack Stack. But really, who cares about most of that? This is a BBQ town and it comes down to the food. The food is... okay. I ordered the Flying Pig. Chicken and pork ribs with fries, slaw and beans. I don't do slaw and beans so I subbed those out with fried pickles and macaroni bites (Because I'm a 10 year old). Starting with the sides: The fries were just okay. I like the cut, they were fried well, and totally adequate. Next up was the fried pickles. They do fried pickle chips instead of spears. Big plus. Chips are superior to spears and if you disagree, well, you are wrong and you just need to accept that. The macaroni bite things I kind of picked as a throw away but I actually enjoyed them quite a bit. Now, I think all this stuff is mostly of the bagged and prepared already variety but they serve it up well so who cares? The chicken was a pretty good. A TOUCH dry but not really in a way that it brought the chicken down. The sauce on the chicken was really good. The ribs were pretty good and again just a little dry. They could have used a little more seasoning. I mention the dryness because it brings me to the sauces. The hint of dryness was just begging for me to dip the meat in the sauces. We grabbed the regular and the hot sauces. I was not a fan of either of them. Not at all. this is my biggest knock on the place. In a town with so many great sauces, a weak sauce just isn't going to cut it. The real bummer was that the sauce that was on the chicken was good. It wasn't wildly different from the regular sauce but was definitely tangier and that was exactly what the regular sauce needed. It is just a little too sweet or something. It has a taste I just can't quite put my finger on. The hot was not my type of spicy. A little more chipotle type heat which isn't my thing. I'm sure some people would enjoy their sauces fine but they aren't my cup of tea. Ultimately, the meats are fine, the sides are good to fine. The sauce is a no go for me. In a town with Oklahoma Joe's (which isn't that far away) and Gates and the rest, this just isn't going to get my repeat business.

This place is the most slept on BBQ place in KCK. I don't eat beef or any other red meet. I eat the beef sandwiches at Rosedale. Does that tell you anything? Its always tender and I love the pickle spears with sauce to go with it. Plus you can get Peach Ne-hi there. How old school awesome is that?

Certainly busy. The two server system was helpful. Rustic - this is one of the older BBQ joints in KC, I'm told. Smells great! Sizable portions. Unfortunately, I don't think they understood the orders - messing up a couple, including mine. I ordered pork, for my sandwich, and ended up with a pig that tasted like turkey. The meat was dry. Not every table has BBQ sauce ... requiring one to collect it in those disposable, small cups that one can use for ketchup in other restaurants.

Rosedale Barbeque isn't the best you can get in KC. But it is still a Kansas City landmark, and definitely should be on any BBQ aficionado's hit list. I ordered the Sliders Special. The special comes with three sliders (one pork, one beef, and one with ham) and fries. First- the fries. They were delicious. Just the right amount of crispiness. Second- the sliders. They were good. And large. Hardly should be considered "sliders". But no complaints in that department. Essentially, Rosedale has been on the KC BBQ scene for a number of decades, and for that reason (and kind of for that reason only) it is necessary to experience the unique tastes and flavors available here. Stay open minded, and you won't be disappointed.

Great place-and they serve RC Cola!

Our usual is the turkey sandwich and the beef on bread and it never disappoints. The fries are extra crispy but you can tell they do not salt them as much as others...so if you like your fries salted do it yourself. We tried the sausage for the first time on our last visit and it is $2.00 extra with a sandwich or dinner basket purchase. It kinda smelled like bacon so I'm assuming it was deep fried in bacon fat...non the less it was tasty but I could only eat a bite or two. Also, it was newly remodeled and they did a great job!

Finally got to check out Rosedale BBQ! Went for lunch on 4th of July, since there's nothing better than some BBQ on the 4th. Kind of falls in the "good, but not great" category of KC BBQ...I ordered a sausage dinner with cole slaw, beans, and a large bottle of RC cola. I also tried a friend's cheesy potato bake. Positives: -Cheesy Potato Bake is pretty awesome -Good spicy BBQ sauce -Sausage was good -RC Cola! -Good service -Pretty affordable/Good portions ($18 for two of us, and we were very full) Negatives: -Fries are bland and have NO seasoning, I had to dump a ton of salt on 'em -Cole slaw was blah -Beans weren't anything special either...no meat in these BBQ beans I probably won't make a special trip just for Rosedale's, but I'm glad I checked it out...even middle of the road KC BBQ is still better than most BBQ around the country.

Hands down the best ribs I've ever had. This place has an old-school feel to it and they do a great job. If you want ribs, go here. Get 'em to go for dinner, too. Grab a bottle of sauce while you're there because it's awesome. If you're more of a beans or slaw person, then move along.

First off, I'm not a bbq expert and don't know all of the nuances that come with the knowledge and passion of bbq fanatics. But I know what tastes good and the value of a dollar. So here is my take on Rosedale Barbeque..... There is nothing fancy about Rosedale, it is simple food served with no pomp and ceremony at a really cheap price along with side of quirkiness. Every time we want OKJoes and we drive by and see the line past the door, we keep driving down the hill to go to Rosedale Barbeque. I love the beef and sausage sandwich and I love the crispy fries (frozen or freshly cut, I don't care). The fried okra is the best I've ever had. The slaw is fine but I am always shocked at the what seems to be green food coloring that is added for some mint green color effect (quirkiness). I like the sauce, it's a little odd as I think it's cinnamon that is added if my taster serves me correct, but I like it. The pricing is so reasonable, almost cheap. We always marvel at total of the ticket and then talk about how much we would have paid at any other bbq place in town for the amount of food that we get. There is nothing fancy here and the space reflects that. It's a stop in, fill your belly with some good food, pay hardly anything and get going with your life kind of place. The counter help is amazingly good. The women behind the counter know there stuff and get the job done. They range from extremely friendly to extremely sassy. Either way, they do the job quickly, with precision and with personality. Maybe this truly is a 3 star bbq place, but there is something about it that I like so much that I can't give them less than 4!

Overall the food I ordered was mediocre. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, sweet potato fries and sweet tea. The pulled pork sandwich had a good taste, but the texture was not very good. The pork was so moist it was almost watery which caused the bun to get soggy. The flavor of the meat was good, and their BBQ sauce was good. The sweet potato fries were simply sweet potatoes that were fried and had nothing put on them after that. This caused them to be relatively plain and a bit bland. The sweet tea was not very good. The service however was great. The staff was attentive and friendly. Best service I've had at a BBQ place in KC outside of Jack Stack) Overall, the meal was ok. The food was not outstanding for Kansas City BBQ.

One of the best off the beaten path joints in kc. I used to regular this joint when I lived downtown before P&L district opened. Bbq sandwich and fries and extra sauce and pickles and you won't regret it! This is the workhorse bbq joint of kc. Roll your damn sleeves up, leave your pretensions behind, and eat kc.

Rosedale is across the street from our hotel, so we decided to try it for some take-out. My husband had a beef sandwich, which he liked. I had burnt ends and corn nuggets. First off, we're from Texas so I think I expected the burnt ends to be different. I've never had KC BBQ, much less even heard of burnt ends, so I expected the burnt ends to be more ... burnt? They were good, but were very close to pot roast. But still good. However, the corn nuggets. I could probably eat half my weight in corn nuggets. Send them to TX, please. Anyway, the atmosphere was nice (very casual), order at the counter/bar, and the staff was pleasant.

I am fortunate to not only be a certified BBQ judge, but to live in the best part of the country for any BBQ aficionado. Having said that let me preface my reviews with this comment: "the worst BBQ in the Kansas City area is usually better than the best BBQ found in the rest of the country". Also bear in mind that when one judges competition BBQ, we are trained to "Judge the meat - not the sauce". This will help explain why my reviews are so critical of the places who want to mask some deficiency in tenderness or taste by the over use of sauce. For the past few months, I have been visiting some of the most recommended BBQ joints in the Kansas City area. I am listing my 'overall' ratings at the beginning of the review for each of the establishments visited. ***** Fiorella's Jack Stack BBQ ***** Danny Edwards Boulevard BBQ **** Gates **** Arthur Bryant's *** Rosedale *** Woodyard *** Smokin Joes - Olathe ** Oklahoma Joes ** Johnny's Rosedale was one of those joints that was just so-so (remember that is a regional adjective, as their products are still better than most I have had in other places). Given our individual preferences, I encourage everyone to try it at least once and then pass on your review for the benefit of us all. The pulled pork and ribs were probably my two favorites and the atmosphere is another one of those often associated with an old time BBQ joint. The sauce was average at best. Give em a try and see what you think.

This is as bad as BBQ gets. We ordered the burnt ends and fries combo for our office. Dry brisket chunks and half frozen Ore Ida fries is what we got. Stay away if you like good BBQ.

Promising barbecue. Excellent service. Loved the cheesy corn bites. Had a very tasty burnt ends sandwich - the only criticism would be that it needed more sauce. Didn't try any of the standard fare, but I would definitely give Rosedale a second look.

I thought I knew what bbq was and what it's supposed to be. I couldn't have been more wrong. I never had real BBQ until tonight. I had Arthur Bryant's this afternoon and it was pure dog food compared to what I had at Rosedale tonight. Rosedale is truly something spectacular

You can order their crinkle-cut fries the way you want them: "soft" or "hard." Not the best bbq in KC, but they're fast. The server behind the bar was decent at the job, but real gruff. Mediocre meats, house-made sauce in regular and hot, open since the 30s. Unlike other bbq joints in town they have a wide variety of sides like cheesy corn, sweet potato fries, and corn nuggets.

  • ILoveyou L.

No good! I'll give 2 stars because the corn nuggets were pretty darn good, and the woman at the front was real freindly. However i had the burnt ends. And i got what reminded me of dry pot roast. No burnt, no end, no good. I figured since they have been in business so long, it should be pretty good. but Nay it was not. I can at least cross it off on my must see bbq places of KC. Anyways its just my A-hole opinion. See for yourself. P.S. LC's has the best burnt ends in KC

We were very disappointed by Rosedale's. On the day we went at lunch, the place was packed, with a line stretching outside through the doors on either end. We have no idea why. Sweetie ordered the two-meat sandwich with beef and pork, along with a bag of fries, while I ordered the two-meat sandwich with chicken and ham. The meat, all four kinds, tasted like nothing. Not a thing. Not meat, not smoke, nothing. We actually pulled pieces of the meat off the bun to taste by themselves, and it was as if we were eating a substance that had a meat-like texture, but no flavor. It was a strange experience. The quantities were decent, but to no point. And sweetie said that the beef seemed quite old. The sauce was not good either. It hit the mouth with a peppery jolt, and then immediately faded to nothing. There was no complexity of flavor, no layering of elements, no lingering on the palate whatsoever. Again, very strange. Even the fries weren't good. Crinkle-cut fries that had been deep-fried, they had a nice crispy exterior, but the insides were mostly hollow, with no good fluffy potato texture. There are SO many good BBQ places in the Kansas City area. Please, try one of them. This place is not worth your time, effort, or money.

This is good solid Kansas City barbeque. I usually alternate between the beef deluxe on a bun and the two meat combo sandwiches. The meat is always tender however I will admit that sometimes it could carry a little more flavor. The sauce is nice and sweet and compliments the dishes well. The fries are usually cooked to a crisp. If you're looking for good barbeque that is a little bit off of the beaten path, this is a good place for you.

Beware of the positive reviews for Rosedale. I followed them here, but I notice now that most are by people who rarely review anything. This is old school BBQ... an institution in KC. Unfortunately it just doesn't offer what BBQ is supposed to offer... smoke, flavor, texture, and smoke. Oh... I already said that. : ) The place was hoppin' like a jack rabbit when I went for lunch. They usher you through on both sides of a central counter. Two ladies shout orders to the kitchen and work the place hard. I like that. I don't like them handling my food and your money. That is freakin disgusting. I had a Deluxe platter that had slaw, beans, ham slices, beef shred, and a short end of ribs... and fries.... whew! Enough to share with a small village!! The fries were made from frozen, crinkle cut and very brown... that is the way I like them so kudos to the fry master. Would have loved fresh potatoes though. The beans were of the canned variety with some meat and spice additions. Not terrible. Not special either. The slaw was garbage and had no taste other than cabbage and mayo and milk. Yuck! The ultra fresh white bread they put on plates here [and elsewhere like Bryants] is just an industrial kitchen nightmare. Hate the stuff. The sauce was actually okay... a little tangy with some white pepper spice or something. The array of sodas was awesome. I had Diet Stewart's root beer, which is a real treat and seldom seen outside of a Cracker Barrel. The meats... well... 2-stars says it all. If I reviewed on the meats alone it might be a 1-star affair. The spare ribs were disgustingly messy, overcooked, completely absent of smoke. The beef shred was lean, but dry and completely absent of smoke. The ham was fine but again there was no smoke. Overall a big disappointment. BBQ originals like this place are supposed to carry theKC BBQ flag, not burn it.

Ordered burnt ends and fries. Meat came out luke warm with no flavor. Putting sauce on it didn't make it much better. Can't believe this place has survived this long. If you want real BBQ, go to Okie Joes.

This is another restaurant where service and food get different ratings. I have a fond place in my heart for Rosedale as it was the first bbq place I ate at in KC. I love their bbq, especially their sausage. The first time I ate here, I tried their burnt ends and it was all done very well. I think the magic is in their sauce. If it came down to just food, it would get 5 stars from me, but sadly I have to take their service into account. Now i'm all for the eateries that want to keep a quaint old fashioned atmosphere but there comes a time when any business needs to recognize that it's service and technology needs to be updated. When I ordered last time, there was only one person working the very long front counter which means she had to run back and forth from one ordering station to the other on the far side to get orders, often asking for orders to be repeated in a frazzled manner. Their register is one of the older models with a simple ticker tape printout and there is no way for the kitchen to know what's being ordered without the counter person YELLING at the top of their lungs through the window. I don't personally care for other people in the place to know what i'm ordering and that bothered me. But not as much as having to repeat my order 6 times as she was trying to handle taking 2 others and sifting through the food window for previous orders. She was very irritated over not having any help and I almost walked out after the 4th time repeating my order. Another employee finally came forward to help with orders after a line built up on both order stations and the woman taking my order got even more frazzled having to explain where she was in the orders to the new girl. These problems are easily fixed with an up to date register that feeds the information to the kitchen. The kitchen employees yelled several times back at her because the orders were getting mixed up. It will be a while before I return here and it's my hope they come into at least the early 21st century.

Having been around for ages, we just went to this one last year. Would not be a favorite but would return again. Full slab special at a very good price on certain days. Really good is the Hot BBQ Sauce. The sauce here I like better than most. Thick Kansas City style tomato base and spicy.

I don't really get Rosedale. I've been several times, often with folks who swear by the place, but I don't understand why. It isn't bad, exactly (although the beef is served in a shredded, fatty mess which I dislike immensely) but it just isn't very good. As mentioned, I'm not a fan of the beef, and the ham is alright but utterly lacking in smoke flavor. The sausage is, fortunately, pretty tasty, and the sauce is not bad, but that's not a lot to hang your hat on. Sides range from mediocre to bad. If you like insanely overcooked fries, I guess that would be a highlight, but the slaw and beans are just not at all good. Perhaps the best thing about Rosedale is that they serve RC Cola.

I had my first trip to Rosedale's last weekend. As many on this page, I am an Oklahoma Joe's devotee. I think it'll stay that way. I was told you can't get better fries than Rosedale's--and that is true. Crispy, crinkle-cut, amazeballs. The mac and cheese bites, cole slaw, beverages...all were great. The barbecue...meh. I like my KC 'cue sloppy and wet, not just meat with a little sauce on top. I also am pretty sure they gave me turkey instead of pulled pork as ordered. At first I thought, this is the weirdest thing in the world...I've never seen pork sliced like this instead of pulled on a barbecue sandwich...but I ate anyway (after slathering it in a hefty dose of extra sauce). About a third of the way through it dawned on me that turkey was on their menu. Barbecue turkey? Get out of KC. Rosedale's was, as my rating demonstrates, A-OK. But given that I visit KC only a couple times a year, I don't think it will make the cut.

I thought this was good 'nuff for what it is. Like others said, I thought the meat (I got a beef sandwich) lacked a bit in smoky flavor, but it was fast, quite reasonably priced, and the sauce was distinctive (I liked it). Fries were quite fried if you're into that.

  • Joseph L.

A co-worker told me about how much they loooove Rosedale so I decided to check it out. Now, a lot of you people are opinionated about who has the best burnt ends, the best ribs, the best sides etc. I have my own favorites, but I assess each place based on their short ends. I think ribs tell the most about a BBQ joint. Rosedale SUCKS! I wont mince words. The meat is flavorless. Lifeless. Anemic even. For the life of me, I cant understand WHY anyone would go here. There are no spices, no smoky flavor, no sweetness. Just some hot sauce and chewy, rubbery, nondescript meat. Sure, it may "fall off the bone" but if you smoke meat for that long, its SUPPOSED to do that! Problem is that it tastes like sawdust. I was so pissed after eating one bite at home that I threw it away, got in my car, and went to another BBQ joint. Very very poor showing for Kansas City. By the way for all you visitors to KC, if youre thinking about going here, STOP. Better BBQ is only a short drive away at Joes. I would have gone there instead but they were closed.

I've been going there since the '60s. Still my favorite after all these years. The biggest change I've noticed is that they now put brisket sandwiches on buns. They'll still but it on white bread if you ask for it, and I do.

  • Liz L.

I have to give Rosedale Five Stars just on the basis of consistency. On ANY given day of ANY month you can walk in and get just about the BEST ribs in Kansas City hands down. Oklahoma Joes CANNOT COMPARE to Rosedale's RIBS PERIOD! They just can't do it. In fact NO BODY IN TOWN can make ribs like Rosedale. As for the burnt ends and brisket they are equal to Ok Joe's but we like Rosedale's nonspicy fries the best. Plus Rosedale does it without all the fan fare and media hype. Oh and don't forget their sauce! Hands down winner of best sauce in the city, easily, over anybody. The interior could be spiffied up a bit but I love that it's a bit on the rough side. PLEASE keep putting out good meat Rosedale, you the winner in our book!!!! A gem of a BBQ place!!!!!

The boyfriend and I went to Rosedale Barbeque on his research and suggestion. I can't believe I hadn't heard of this place before, because it was excellent. BF copied me and ordered the pulled pork sandwich, and we split an order of sweet potato fries. The sweet potato fries ALONE are worth a second, and probably third visit. Best I've ever had in my life, swearsies. Our sandwiches were loaded with delicious meat, which is everything you can hope for. Bigger than I was expecting, which is a plus, but only if you're not on a diet. The barbecue sauce there is less sweet than vinegary, and with a hint of celery taste. The hot and spicy sauce really has a lingering burn. Don't use too much at once. Too bad I don't live closer to this place. Everything is delicious but the joint has absolutely zero hubris. There are two entrances and two places to order from, but the menus are different on each side. Not in content, but in style. The booths have hard wooden seats, and the tables/chairs are the sort you'd find in a bingo hall. Overall great place, hope to visit again!

if you think rosedales is the best BBQ in KC or that it's your favorite, then there is no use in arguing with you. I probably think you've never been anywhere else, or that maybe your mother was a bad cook and so that's what you're used to from when you were a kid. and if you honestly prefer frozen crinkle-cut fries to fresh cut, there's simply no hope for you. This is NOT the worst BBQ in Kansas City. It's just not any good. In fact, it's pretty bad. Sorry, it just is. The meat is tastless, the fries are frozen and the sauce is completely crappy. some places get a reputation because some time way back when they earned it. I can't imagine Rosedales ever being more than it is now. Pure Crap.

This place has gone down hill really quickly. It's not serious bbq anymore to me. I went with a bunch of friends from work today, and the only thing that was good were the corn nuggets. The sandwiches were dry and bland. The expensive fries were overcooked and just awful. The average check was $12-$15 per person. The lady that waited on us was obviously in a bad mood, and was scattered all over the place. She couldn't concentrate and had 4 things going on at once. We used to come to this place a lot, but today was our last. :(

This place isn't horrible, but it doesn't compare to the good BBQ places in town by any stretch. It's pretty metiocre and overpriced for the taste and quality. The beans taste like canned baked beans with some stuff added. The slaw was average. The pulled pork was fine. Not very tasty and they don't serve it with sauce- which would be fine if the meat was tastier. There's only one type of sauce so if you don't like that, you're out of luck. It's on the spicy side and has an odd flavor. The slab of ribs was cooked well but not very flavorful. I wouldn't go here again, especially with all of the real BBQ places in this city.

Food was ok. Definitely had better. I wouldn't turn it away if in the neighborhood but wouldn't go out of my way to get there either. One serving drinks only, no refills.

Round #4 Stop #2 BBQ quest If this review was based solely on the food it would get a 3 and a half or 4, however... This place was highly recommended as a place the local techs go to for lunch. It is located closer into town in an older industrial area. A funky old place. Went in right after class to a pretty empty establishment, looks like most people get their Q to go. Walked in and sat at the bar, was basically ignored so I got up and stood at the end of the counter to place my order because it looked like that was the place to get attention. When I got to the front of the line I asked what one of the items on the menu was and got a quick answer. I ordered what I thought was a pork and sausage combo dinner and asked it it came with sides and got a curt no. So I ordered a side of corn nuggets. I also ordered a beer. I sat at the bar thinking if I did maybe it would get the point across that I wanted to eat in since I wasn't asked. I got my order, it was packed to go, no beer. So I left. I dug into my eats and have to admit that it was tasty, a little dry because only sausage had sauce and when I was in I didn't know where to get extra sauce and for the first time in as long as I can remember I was intimidated from asking by the little old lady behind the counter. The sausage was incredible. The corn nuggets were excellent. I will be back, after all the food was good. Only this time I will be little more assertive in my ordering.

Staff is VERY friendly and easy going. They don't rush you like a lot of the other BBQ joints. The fries were crinkles and overcooked. Nothing special here, but good with lots of ketchup. I had the burnt ends and they gave me a huge portion for the 7.99 dinner with fries. Pretty lean and the fat was easy enough to log off if you care. I should have stopped eating it 1/2 way and took it home, but I didn't. BBQ COMA!!!! Unlimited refills of sweet tea that was good. If I could rate only on NO lines and quick service, I'd give it a 5!

After looking through the other reviews here, I can see that at least 50% of the people who read this will think I have absolutely no refined taste...and, the other 50% will think I am a genius; because.... I like this place! I have eaten here, for years. It is one of my favorite BBQ "joints" to go and get a beef sandwich and fries (ohhhh, those glorious fries!). That being said, I have tried their ribs, a few times....had the beans, and also the slaw. I thought all of that was just "ok". Not really "bad"; but, then...not really "great" either. If you are coming to KC and only have one shot at BBQ there are other places I would recommend. But, if you live here and enjoy BBQ this is definitely worth a try for a good sandwich and fries. No, they are not fresh cut. Yes they are frozen crinkle cut, and cooked nearly to a crisp...but that is EXACTLY what I enjoy about them...I love getting those crispy, hollow fries that are pretty much petrified potato soaked in hot grease. I dip them into a mixture of 1/2 ketchup and 1/2 Rosedale sauce (which, I happen to like very much) and it adds the perfect amount of "zing!" to the french fry experience. I think I can pretty much feel my arteries clogging with cholesterol with each and every scrumptious bite. As others have mentioned, the prices are very reasonable. And, finally, no...don't come here for "service". This place is not pretentious, it is exactly what it appears to be: A BBQ "Joint".

Rosedale serves the highest quality barbecue ribs out there. A full rack of ribs is a trip through smokey rib heaven. The rib meat in the center is moist and delicate (and plentiful). As you move towards the end of the rack the meat becomes firmer - a terrific smokey jerky. If you aren't ordering a full rack, then get the "short end dinner". That's a great sampling of the ribs, plus some sides. Randomly - the french fries are really good. I don't eat that sort of thing very often, but they are really good.

  • Beau S.

Good sauce, I will give them that. And very fairly priced. But other than that, it's a pretty boring bbq experience. The best word to summarize this place would be "meh" like the 2 star rating gives.

If you go here, get the ribs! I tried the burnt ends and ribs. Burnt ends were alright, but the ribs were tender and practically fell off the bone. Some of the best ribs I've had.

I was introduced to Rosedale BBQ while interning at KCPT. I later learned that my internship supervisor talked about the place on the KCPT program "Check Please! Kansas City," and they proudly display a plaque with his quote: "If you want to have a religious experience with a bag of fries, a pile of meat, and a puddle of sauce, this is the place." The food is excellent. I highly recommend the beef sandwich and the fried mac and cheese bites.

Love barbeque, so friends took us there for a treat, being one of the oldest barbeque places in Kansas. I had to put a good face on it for them but I was a bit disappointed. I had the Burnt Ends and it was a case of, "Where's the Ends?" as I had no burnt end bits that I could see but fatty meat. The sauce was runny and excessively sweet & a bit reminiscent of generic Sweet & Sour sauces. Or so it struck not only me, but all four in our group. The inside is dark and dim with seating at benches or small tables. It's a plain, down-home place. I wonder if we hit it on a decidedly off day? It's O.K. barbeque. Nice in-house t-shirts, mugs and things if you're into that. I'll say it again: I don't mind at all what a place looks like inside(within reason), if the food is delicious and well cooked. Put it this way - when I return to Kansas City, we'll try some other place. Wanted to like Rosedale - tried hard to do so.

Did you know that match.com lets you choose a desired height as low as 3 feet??? wow, thats what the internet is for. Rosedale is for bbq, not 3 foot hook-ups-not that there is anything wrong with that. My opine is slightly skewed b.c this is the only KC bbq i tried- so It was naturally the best KC style bbq I have ever had. So much meat on these ribs- I have to admit I felt like a member of the Donner Party.

I've never heard great things about Rosedale, but decided to give it a try since there were some decent reviews here on yelp. Well, I was not impressed. I ordered the burnt ends and fries. The burnt ends were not burnt at all. They looked more like thick sliced brisket cut into smaller pieces. They were completely devoid of any burnt flavor at all. I am amazed they try to pass these off at burnt ends. The sauce was serviceable, but nothing I'd seek out again. The one semi-bright spot was the fries. They tasted like frozen ore-ida fries, but they were crinkle cut and well done. I'd at least eat them again. I'll give an extra star for that.

  • Danny L.

Yeah sorry Im not buying it. Apparently at one time Rosedale's BBQ was a place to be reckoned with but that time has long since passed. The only people I know that love Rosedale's greasy ribs... flavorless brisket... boring sauce, and sub par french fries are people that I KNOW have no sense of refined taste. People go to Rosedale's because its all they know... or all their daddy knew or whatever. This place isnt worth the time or the money for good BBQ. Do yourself a favor and drive a few blocks down the street to Blvd. BBQ (Danny Edwards).

So I had been to all the popular Kansas City BBQ joints and came up upon Rosedale's one day and thought, why the hell not?! I had heard of it a little bit, being one of the not as popular places so I'm always up for good BBQ. I was extremely disappointed to say the least. Maybe the place usually puts out better food, but everything that my group ordered tasted like crap. Between brisket, pork, turkey, and burnt ends nothing tasted mediocre. Pork deserved the gold medal for tasting closest to average. Hate to slam a restaurant so much, but the burnt ends were dry, did not have that sexy crust, and was just blaaaah. French fries were nothing to write home about, the other sides were okay. But how hard is it to make decent beans? Do youself a favor, IMHO, go to one of the well-known BBQ joints in town, especially LC's and Joe's. They are popular for a reason.

Great ribs, fries, and sandwiches. Good deal for your money. Plus, where can you still get an RC Cola?

    (4)
  • Laurie M.

If you're looking for a barbecued beef Sandwich, Rosedale barbecue has the best one in Kansas City. And it's about the only restaurant that will serve you an ice cold RC Cola. And on Sundays you can get a slab of baby back ribs that are out of this world. They serve french fries differently. They are double fried and very crispy.

I personally enjoy the food at Rosedale as one of the best in my opinion in the KC area. However, I dinged them a star because the service is really lame.

It was New Year's Eve and we were thinking we need to fuel up on something heavy before we start our revelry at our neighborhood watering hole, only a few minutes from home, so we could be as safe as possible on this festive holiday eve. So, we piled into the Caddy and drifted down 7th Street to Rosedale Barbecue. How many times had we sailed down this same route to dine at any number of Mexican restaurants from the Kansas side of the Boulevard down to the Missouri side? I kept thinking I needed to get back into Rosedale as we try very hard to patronize our KCK restauranteurs. When I was a kid, I spent 6 years of my early life growing up in Rosedale before Urban Renewal. So, y'all know how old that makes me! I remember going to this place and buying meat by the pound, hot pickles, slaw and beans and then having a mighty feast with the whole family on a Saturday evening. So, it was with fond memories that my dining companion and I visited Rosedale Barbecue. I ordered my favorite, Burnt Ends dinner and substitued onion rings for the fries. I also ordered a side of the slaw and a RC Cola. My dining companion decided to order the same. It was around 8:30 pm so the place was relatively empty with just two or three other people dining in. The woman behind the counter was friendly and quick with our order and we were seating ourselves with heavy plates in no time. I was disappointed that although the serving was healthy, the flavor was rather bland. Not what I remembered but maybe it was bland back then. I mean, it wasn't bad, it was just kind of ... blah. I sauced it up a little and that helped but the meat just wasn't very smoky or flavorful. It was ok. The slaw...BORING...I could do without it and I LOVE SLAW! I ate about half of it and took the rest home with half the meat which I planned to put some of our home made sauce on later to see if that would perk it up. Okay, the onion rings? Total disaster. I love, love, love onion rings but these things only fell apart when I tried to eat them. Kind of crispy but rather loose? Good flavor but how can you enjoy an onion ring when it is crumbling into your catsup or breaking up in your fingers before you can get it into your mouth? Next time I will try the fries and yes, there will be a next time. This place is a Kansas City tradition and in my home town and I have to give it another try. The food isn't nasty or not tasty it's just not anything special and I think that's what's more disappointing than anything. OH, I did order a hot pickle and it was DELISH! Nice and salty and spicy! As for the diversity of opinion amongst the other reviewers? It just goes to show you how wide and varied Kansas City barbecue tastes are and I think that's a good thing. We all don't like the same thing. While I think this place has meat that is blah on flavor, smoke, spice, etc., others rant and rave about it like it's the best thing since sliced bread. Hey! That's okay by me. Listen up kidlets. Kansas City has a split personality. On one side, we tend to relish the boring, the adventureless, the run-of-the-mill but on the other side? We are wild, crazy, spicy, nasty, flirtatious and daring. I like that about Kansas City. Overall, we'll eat here again but it won't be any time soon because there are just way too many barbecue joints in this town and many of them are much better in flavor than this joint.

Kansas City BBQ to perfection with a wonderful selection of meat, sides, and a delicious sauce with a smokey, vinegar based, spicy, yet sweet combination, to make any BBQ lover feel like he/she is walking up the stairway to heaven. As a food lover, being in Kansas City for a week means I will be trying at least 2 or 3 of the city's BBQ restaurants. And so, after a few different upscale BBQ places were recommended to me by a local on my flight to KC, I asked him about good BBQ at "hole-in-the-walls", and he recommended Rosedale. And he was right. You go there for the FOOD, and the FOOD you get, and it's amazing. A great selection of meat, including beef, ham, pork, turkey, chicken, or sausage, served smoked, with barbeque sauce, will make any foo lover drool. When you walk in, walk right up to either of the two ends of the bar, and they'll take your order there. After you order, you seat yourself, and they'll bring the food to the bar for you, when it's ready. I had the beef dinner plate, served as strips of beef brisket, with sides of cole slaw, and beans, with two slices of white toast. I added their fried onion rings, in lieu of the french fries. When I got my plate, I drenched the meat in sauce, and off to the races. My food was gone in less than 4 minutes. The beef was cooked perfectly. Great flavor, just a touch of smoke, with the delicious sauce. I really wanted to try the chicken as well as the "burnt ends", but didn't have space. My meal, with a drink cost $10. The atmosphere is, well, it's a BBQ restaurant atmosphere. The restaurant has been in operation for over 65 years, and although it looks like it has undergone multiple renovations over that time, it is needing another upgrade sometime in the next few years. But what I love about this restaurant, is the priorities are straight.... on the food, where they should be. Instead of upscale dining, and elaborate menus, they have concentrated on their food for almost 7 decades, and they have perfected it. I'd rather have great food, than mediocre food at a more upscale place. But I guess we'll find out how the other ones will rate. I plan to go to Fiorella's Jack Stack, and perhaps Arthur Bryant's as well this week. We'll see if I make it, and how they stack up. Rosedale's was great food, and I would go there to have dinner with family or friends any day. Not the place for a romantic date, or an upscale evening out. I highly recommend it and I too put them very high on my list of best barbecue and look forward to a return trip sometime for more, perhaps the chicken or burnt ends.

Do yourself a favor when you're craving bbq and go to any other bbq restaurant in KC. Got the burnt end sandwhich and it was the worst burnt ends I've ever had - very chewy and dry, I had to drench in sauce just so that I could work it down enough to swallow it. If you want some good bbq in this area go to danny edwards/gates/ok joes - anywhere but here. I would rather skip lunch than eat again at rosedale.

I've been to rosedale before and thought it was ok, so I decide to give it a second chance on this Sunday and yet they still didn't redeem themselves. I got a short end dinner, and a combo dinner pick two add sausage for .75 more and let me tell ya my ribs where so dry and flavorless my dog wouldn't even eat it when I tried to give it to him, my brisket and pull pork was just as bad, and the sausage was not cooked enough. I myself thought when it comes to BBQ it's a chance to show your grilling skills, your masterpiece, something that comes from the heart, and I didn't taste that when I went to rosedale. Needless to say I want be back, but thought I should share my experience to let people know if you spend twenty something dollars on BBQ make sure it's some other place then Rosedale BBQ.

(this is a review I wrote on yahoo.com for this place) It's amazing the diversity of views on this place. Half the reviews tell how horrid the place is and half the views tell how it's the best bar be que joint in KC. Let's put our thinking caps on. If you look further, each poor review is met with how the poor reviewers are insane and how great Rosedale is. This to me smacks of people coming and giving favorable reviews and trashing poor reviews - they were either paid for or the owners/operators themselves came in and gave favorable reviews while trashing the poor ones. Well, I ate there this past Sunday. Awful food. I wasn't impressed with a single dish. I ordered the burnt ends and they weren't technically burnt ends. The sauce is awful -- it just has an odd molasses based flavor with a touch of spiciness. My brother ordered a plate full of turkey, ham, and supposed baby back ribs --- but being the Bar B Que officiando that he is, he knew the were a lesser quality spare rib. It's funny, my sister in law said the best thing there were the fried corn pieces, which tasted like fried oil and bland corn - no flavor. This is the worst place I've ever eaten at for KC bar be que, don't be fooled.

I think people tend to either really like the sauce at Rosedale or can't stand it. I'm on the end of finding it quite tasty...just enough spice, just enough sweet, and something I can't quite put my finger on...tamarind? I'm not sure. Yesterday I picked up our standard order : a sausage for each of us, an RC cola for each of us, fries, side of beans, side of slaw, small bottle of sauce, and some jalapeno poppers. The slaw is pretty standard, but good. The beans are fairly spicy, and have some nice chunks of meat. I always find the fries to be real crispy, which I prefer over undercooked. I use them as a vehicle for shoving more sauce in my face! The poppers are nothing unusual, I just like them. Again, delicious dredged in sauce. Then there is the sausage...oh the sausage! I've tried the ribs, and the turkey sandwich there, but the sausage is where it is at!! It is split length wise down the middle, and tastes like heaven. Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. I find myself thinking of it at least once a month, and just have to make the drive to get one. Oh...the RC is the finishing touch. If you are not going the beer route, definitely have a frosty can of RC. Rosedale usually has some unique sides that aren't always available...different salads, cobbler, and corn nuggets to name a few. The staff is always friendly, they know how to move a line, and there is ample seating inside with a giant bottle of sauce on each table.

I'm from San Francisco and can't find a decent BBQ joint at home but when I'm in KC I gotta stop at Rosedales. No frills just BBQ and I love their sauce always get the burnt ends and pulled pork. Thanks to my brother in law and my peeps from KC I discovered what BBQ should taste like and found new food. "What the hell are corn nuggets?" inside joke. Not the best BBQ in KC but I'm a fan

This place has been around for ages, and our dad used to take us here every time we came to visit KC. SO now when I visit KC, my brother and I go. THIS place rules because its no frils, no judgement, and their BBQ is the shiz. I recommend their 2 meat combo on bun. Their fries are so effing good its rickdickulous. Strawberry in a can. Cant go wrong. My brother says their ribs are hit and miss....word to the wise.

My fifteen year old son loves barbecue and since we moved to Kansas City in August we have tried to indulge him often with visits to all of the recommended local bbq's. As the saying goes, ask where to go for barbecue and you'll get many different answers, many being loud and emphatic. Somewhere along the line we heard about Rosedale-it ended up being a huge disappointment. Maybe our palettes aren't refined enough, but the slab of ribs we took home, never was finished. The burnt ends were tasteless and the chicken was at best decent. Maybe it was a bad day in the kitchen. I do agree that the fries were excellent.

Oh Rosedale's - I lost my barbeque virginity to you and you're still my first love! When I first visited KC ten years ago, I was under the impression that the word "barbeque" was a verb ("Hey Jen, let's barbeque some salmon tonight!") rather than a noun. After being set straight by my Midwestern-born boyfriend, he took me to Rosedale's to introduce me to the world of Kansas City barbeque. And although meat has never been one of my favorite foods, I was anxious to try this regional delicacy. I ordered up a barbeque turkey sandwich, some fries, and never looked back. Ten years and several visits later, Rosedale's is ALL about the fries and the sauce. The fries are crinkle cut and super crispy just I like them. I can't identify the flavor of the oil they use, but I have a sneaking suspicion that it isn't the least bit heart healthy. The sauce is unlike any other barbeque sauce I have tasted (and I have since tried the barbeque at several places around the country) and I love the stuff - I'm told that it's nutmeg that gives it the unique flavor. The meat - well, admittedly I'm no expert but I've found both the turkey and the burnt ends to be sufficiently lean and tasty to suit my preference for not a lot of fat on my meat. I give this place five stars for the fries and sauce, and three for the meat, which averages out to a four star rating. I'll be back next time I'm in KC.

You gotta love a joint like Rosedale BBQ. It is what it is. Nothing pretentious or misleading. Some go there to drink, others for BBQ. I like the BBQ. The ribs and brisket can be a bit inconsistent, but generally it is well seasoned, obviously freshly cooked, tender and hot. The portions are very generous and the prices are the most reasonable I've found in KC for BBQ. More than once we scooted down the road to Rosedale's from Oklahoma Joe's due to the long lines. It's nice to walk thorough the door, order immediately, sit down with a beer and have the food delivered...and order another beer. Douse the dry rubbed meat with a hot, spicy/sweet tomato based sauce, typical of KC, and you can lean back and breeze to the finish line. Done.

I had my first sampling of Rosedale barbecue last month. Sadly I'm pretty sure it will be my last. The ribs were over-cooked and stringy with chunks of fat. The fries were cooked in cold grease and were soggy and pretty darn nasty. Their sauce is sweet and spicy with a hint of cinnamon or allspice in the background. My Dad picked it up, so I'm not sure of the facilities. But do try it. A lot of people say its really good, but it wasn't my cup of tea. I'd try Jackstack (for good meat) or Gates for some killer sauce.

Thought I'd finally try it since I was in the hood, and this place has been around forever, they must have something right? Nah.. lousy service, flavorless beef sandwich. Tried to save it with tons of sauce but the sauce sucked too.

Horrible BBQ and I only hope anyone who comes from another state does not go to rosedale cause I would not want them to think this is what Kansas City BBQ is all about. The meat is dry, the sauce is nothing more than ketchup, the ribs are horrible and the staff is rude. Please go somewhere else and save you time and money.

I went here recently since everyone was robotically waiting on Oklahoma Joe's ( I have yet to try to this seemingly over-hyped place). They threw me a sandwich, a hot pickle, and an RC. I blacked out for a minute but when I came to it was gone so I guess I liked it enough.

I must admit, Rosedale BBQ has a serious fan base. Mostly area locals who've been going here for years and have kind of put a wall between Rosedale and the rest of the places KC has to offer. Its a love of Rosedale based on stubborness and familiarity, moreso than for the food quality. Whatever floats your boat. I just don't think smoked turkey should smell and taste like bacon. Serves me right I guess for ordering turkey at a BBQ place, but it came recommended. From beef to ribs, to pork, to chicken, Rosedale is just kind of there. Sadly, Rosedale can be lumped in with the Zarda's, Quick's, and Wyandot BBQ's of the city. They have their followings, but the discerning BBQ fan knows better.

I've eaten there twice. Went with the whole family this time and ordered a whole slab of ribs. The price was right and the portion HUGE. Must say the meat was really nicely cooked - much better slab of pork than Bryants serves up Last time I went to AB's the slab was dry as a bone - they must be trying to get everyone to just order a burnt end sami). At Rosedale's the meat was literally falling off the bone and juicy. Be warned, however, they don't season the meat very much, so smother it with their spicy BBQ sauce for full impact. The sides were excellent, especially the baked beans. My wife and mother in law ordered the burnt ends - which were pretty average, but good. The staff was super friendly. It's no LC's but definitely worth it if Edward's down the road is closed.

We have been here a few times. This is a decent KC staple, but does not rank in the top tier for KC. It is worth the stop if you are in the area, but not the kind of food that you are going to drive out of your way for when there are so many other great BBQ joints in the KC area.

Great BBQ with great sauce, but there are a couple of things keeping this place from being 5 stars. First, sometimes the service can be pretty lousy. The fact that there are 2 "entrances" with 2 separate lines sometimes means you have to wait longer than people who just arrived to get served. Also, the fries are crazy greasy (although admittedly delicious). Can't say I would go to this place over Oklahoma Joe's, but it's a more than acceptable alternative.

Maybe I'm not a BBQ expert, but these were o.k. We shared a dozen ribs with fries and a side of slaw. The ribs (pork) were a bit dry on the ends, and had a quite a bit of fat - is that normal? The fires were well received by my husband, but I like them a bit more skinny. The slaw was o.k. I'm not thrilled about the sauce (spicy, but very tomato paste-like tasting). Service is great, fast and friendly. This is my second time visiting the joint and I remain lukewarm about it.

I was down around this place for something else, so I decided to give this place a try as I had heard good things from at least a person or two. I went for lunch today and had a combo dinner. She said it normally comes with beef and ham. I asked for something besides ham and she offered pork. I agreed. The meal comes with cole slaw, beans and fries. While I waited for the 4 seconds it took for the food, I saw that Rosedale won a "Best of KC" for their fries. Well, hot damn, I thought... Well here's the food. Wtf? They are your standard Cysco krinkle cut fries you got in the high school cafeteria. Ok, whatever... now the meat. The pork was long and widely cut and not shredded at all, it was served cold. Not just luke warm, it was downright cold. The beef brisket that lay underneath was fairly hot, but it was dried out and was at the stage where it was falling apart from itself b/c it was dry. The cole slaw? You know that green slaw that is finely chopped? You get it at the grocery store? That's what they serve. The beans were damned good. Great flavor. The sauce was pretty awesome too. Al in all, I have to say I was greatly dissapointed. I did get a takeout order of ribs for tonight, so I will try and edit in after I have them. I've had WAY over my fair share of bbq in various KC restaurants, and I have to say this place isn't worth the drive for me. If I lived within 3 miles, they might see me again. *** edit in for the ribs. well, i wish i something good to report. nope. ribs weren't anything that great. not even enough for another star. i'm sick and tired of KC bbq joints dissapointing me. how the faken hard is it to make bbq? NOT THAT HARD. i do it all the time and i am a complete idiot.
